Exley Lumber Company, LLC, located in Clyo GA, is a family-owned sawmill and is the oldest sawmill operation in Effingham County.  James William Exley, Sr. bought his first piece of timber in 1922 at the age of 18.    From that time, he continued to purchase timber and manufacture lumber.  His son, J. W. Exley, Jr. joined him in the business in 1949.  In the early days, the portable sawmill was set up in the woods where the timber was harvested.  Exley, Sr. retired in 1962 leaving his son in charge.  A permanent sawmill was built around 1970 in Clyo and remains on the same site today.  His son, J. W. (Bill) Exley, III joined his father full time in business in 1972 He was one of the sawyers working at the mill and became head of wood procurement, harvesting and reforestation.  Bill’s wife, Sue, joined the staff in 1975 and continues to work in the administrative area of the business. J’s younger son, Don, joined the business full time in 1983 and became involved with lumber sales and sawmill management. Both Bill and Don have continued to manage the business through the present day.  Don’s sons Chip and Miles have joined the family in the business making it a fourth-generation sawmill.  Chip’s wife, Hunter, joined the crew in 2021 working in the office.  The sales part of the business is Riverfield Sales, Inc. and is in charge of selling the lumber products.  Exley Sawmill is a small sawmill that specializes in manufacturing rough green timbers along with other wood dimensions.  Many of these products are sent to treating plants before being distributed all over the nation.  Ninety percent of the raw materials are purchased locally.  The logging operation has cut the same tract of timber for some owners as many as three times in the business lifetime.  Here at Exley, we take pride in managing other’s property as if it were our own.
